On Friday morning, the gaming world was treated to the following video of a frustrated girlfriend deleting her boyfriend’s World of Warcraft characters and then filming his reaction.

The world of Twitter went nuts over the video, and some even speculated that the video is staged. One thing both of us agree on is that even if this video was staged, it’s incredibly disturbing.

Sheik: I find several things about this incident to be disturbing. First of all, taking that the video is real, what is wrong with this girl? So your boyfriend has an obsessive hobby that annoys you. Yes, it may seem retarded because it’s over a video game, but is that really so different than the guy who is obsessed with going out to bars and partying? This is a case of where the guy’s and girl’s interests don’t line up. That’s fine. Break up with him and move on. Don’t delete his WoW characters just because you don’t get it and are tired of it. Grow up.

Next, dude, it’s a game for crying out loud! I know that you’ve spent a ton of money on the monthly subscription and accessories for your characters, but did you have to react so violently when you saw they were gone? Now you’re out nearly another $1000 because you couldn’t control your temper like my two-year-old. Did you punch your girlfriend when you found out she was the culprit? Loser.

And now, if this was indeed staged, shame on both of you for being so pathetic and needing five minutes of fame on the Internet. I hope you both got what you wanted out of the deal and you’re able to keep your mouths shut, because no one will believe what either of you have to say ever again if the truth leaks.

Samus: At first I totally rooted for the girl, especially after I saw his jackass reaction.  I could see this as a situation where it was a normal relationship and then WoW entered the picture.  It it looks like he’s got some issues besides just a WoW addiction. So now that it’s at the end she couldn’t get back her time and effort, but she could take something away.  It was the only way she could really hurt him.  And we’ve all been at the end of a relationship and felt that way.  So yeah, I rooted for her.

But the more I thought about it, the more something thing seemed fishy. There are really only two possibilities here:  this is either staged or she plays WoW herself. She deleted all those characters way too fast to be the innocent non-gamer girlfriend.  He went to the store to get some smokes.  Unless you live out in BFE that should take 20 minutes at most.  Now in that time you’re telling me she was able to navigate his account, go through all his characters (of which there looked to be at least four), and delete everything? All the while not being a WoW player?  While I’ve never played WoW myself, I’ve seen it played.  I’m a pretty smart individual, but I had no idea what the hell was going on just by looking at it. There are a bajillion different buttons, icons, notifications, etc.  I’d have to sit through a gaming tutorial just to know what they all were.  And she just hops on and navigates through all of it while he’s getting smokes? Bullshit.

So this leads me back to my two possibilities, and even these can be whittled down.  If she is a WoW player, this probably would have been something they shared and she would have played with him.  She would have understood his attachment to his players and not deleted them.  She would have just broken up with him and found some other WoW boy to shack up with.  So I am now rejecting this theory.

And that just leads me to this being staged.  It’s impressive, because he does a pretty good number on that monitor. It’s also stupid, because it was about 4 minutes of glory at the cost of a seemingly nice monitor.  Jackass.

Sheik: Samus, you nailed something RIGHT on the head that I thought of after I wrote my first portion. She did seem to know how to delete those characters awfully quickly and quite knowledgeably. I am somewhat of a techie, but I know I couldn’t have deleted all of those characters in less than two minutes. I somehow doubt Blizzard makes it that easy for just anyone, player or not, to randomly delete characters. She seemed to be typing a lot of things for someone who doesn’t play WoW or someone who isn’t staging a drama.

I have to ask though, if she also plays WoW (assuming this wasn’t staged) then what was the real reason behind deleting his characters? Was he Horde and you Alliance?

Either way, both players in this dinner theater are immature.
